This time next year

The White House, here, is framed by one of the cherry blossom trees of Thomas Circle around 6:00 p.m. last Sunday, near sunset. One can only hope that this time next year someone else will be living there.

Cherry Blossoms

After a few days of spring-like weather, the cherry blossoms have arrived. So have the tourists, hoardes of them. Mothers and teachers are guiding herds of obese schoolchildren from Burger King to the Tidal Basin, from Subway to the Metro, from the Pentagon City Food Court to the Air and Space Museum. The T-Shirt vendors are smiling. The Old Town Trolley tour buses are jammed. All the riders gaze out at us Washingtonians going about our ordinary business as if we were exotic wildlife seen on an urban safari.
Last Friday I had lunch at Bistro D’Oc, site of the saloon where John Wilkes Booth had a drink before heading to Ford’s Theatre across the street to shoot Lincoln. A dozen or so schoolchildren, fresh from a tour of Ford’s, cluttered the entrance to the restaurant. The maitre d’ had to keep running out to shoo them off. The small tourists found this behavior odd. I doubt they had ever seen a French maitre d’ before.

Cameras, cameras everywhere

Everything I own now, it seems, has a camera. My cellphone. My PDA. On top of that, I have two digital cameras and several film cameras.
This picture comes from my PDA. It’s a picture of my gym which I took tonight on the way to my workout. It reminds me of the first pictures I took using available light and high speed color film. Both are grainy and oversaturated. It’s funny how a modern technology can look so dated.

Back

After a short absence, I’m back. I’ve been busy at work, and I have had the added burden of teaching a class at Georgetown this semester, which has kept me from maintaining this photolog.
This picture was taken at Devon’s house in West Virginia back in January. It’s a reflection from a copper bowl hanging on the kitchen wall over the refrigerator. It snowed all weekend, and we almost slid into a ditch on the way home.
